Dec 6, 2022

By Zara Dureno, MOT, Occupational Therapist

Although a lot of people’s lives have started to return to some semblance of normal in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, some people are still experiencing symptoms of long COVID and do not know where to turn for help. We have technology at our clinic which may be able to alleviate some of the symptoms associated with long COVID.

People with long COVID can experience headaches, dizziness, prolonged pain, headaches, fatigue, cognitive difficulties and mental health issues among other things. These symptoms can make it difficult to work, do things around the house and interact with those that you love. Neurofeedback is a non-medication and non-invasive treatment which may be a good option to help alleviate some of these symptoms.

When our brain is not functioning the way we want it to and we are anxious, fatigued or having cognitive difficulties, the electricity which the neurons use to communicate reflects how we are feeling. If we are feeling sluggish, the waves of the electricity in our brain are slower. If we are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, the waves become too fast. In order to feel great, we need our wavelengths to match up to the task we are doing. With long COVID, the wavelengths may be disrupted. Neurofeedback can help you to restore the brainwaves to their optimal state.

Neurofeedback is a device you put on your head and it reads the brainwaves you are currently emitting and shows them to you in the form of a game on your phone. When your brainwaves are sluggish or too fast, your character in the game does poorly and you do not get points. When your brainwaves are just right, the character does well and you get points. In this way, your brain is learning to be in the optimal state because it is getting positive reinforcement. This can help you to feel more clear, focused and less tired. In some cases, it can help reduce pain as well.
